The moon gate is a traditional Chinese landscape element found in gardens. The celestial body from which it was named is important in Chinese culture, and bringing its shape to architectural elements, it symbolizes a portal in between worlds and thought to bring good luck. This is one of the moon gates found in Shanghai’s most visited garden.
